Carrick-on-Shannon is a town in County Leitrim.

Carrick on Shannon is a town built around a crossing of the river Shannon. The seat of Leitrim County Council and largest settling in the otherwise barren plains of Leitrim, the main industries are agriculture and international finance.

Get in

Served by the main Dublin-Sligo rail and road routes. The N4 Primary National Road passes through Carrick-on-Shannon en route to Sligo. There is a Iarnroid Eireann train station for Carrick-on-Shannon linking Dublin to Sligo.

The town is also served by the internal waterways network which link Enniskillen (County Fermanagh) to Killaloe (County Clare).

Get around

A small built up area, so all can be seen by foot. Once outside the main town some kind of transportation is most useful. Amphibious or tracked vehicles are best during the rainy season (August-June)

Costellos' Chapel on Main Street is the second smallest church in Europe. Cortober village (on the Roscommon side of the river) is on the outskirts of Carrick

Carrick-on-Shannon offers a lot of options depending on what the visitor requires:

Parties (including hens and stags) are often to be found and well accommodated in Carrick.

Culture is also high on the agenda with many small Irish pubs in the town established with standing traditional music nights.

  • Victoria Hall. Asian Fusion cuisine. Eat in a renovated church.
  • Boardwalk Restaurant. In the Landmark Hotel. Modern Irish food.
  • Oarsman. Award-winning. Sometimes requires booking but is well worth it. Rotating specials are usually found on the menu in this pub.
