Understand

Askersund is a popular tourist destination with swimming and natural experiences. The city centre is marked by its wooden buildings and two churches.

History

Askersund was mentioned in the 1300s by the name Eskersund and in the 1400s under the name Askasund. Askersund was bought during Vadstena during Johan III, when Sundbo died until 1640 during the county of Finspånga in Östergötland. In 1643 Askersund received city privileges to be a center for the nailing of the surrounding district and its trade.

Askersund's oldest house, one of the houses that passed the fire in 1776. On June 6th, 1776, a fire ravaged in Askersund, and the same evening the entire city was burnt down, with the exception of 8-9 houses. 3 people died in the fire. A new city was built 10 years later "thanks to state aid and many volunteer victims". Some of the houses that survived the fire are today in Hembygdsgården in Askersund City Park.
