Demopolis is the largest city of Marengo County in the River Heritage region of Alabama.

Imagine a haven for French expatriates in the newly emerging United States of America. That is the story of Demopolis. In 1817, it was founded by a group of French refugees whose previous home on Saint-Domingue (present day Haiti and Dominican Republic) was overtaken in a slave revolt. From there, it grew to become a typical albeit sometimes raucous Southern town with cotton production at the fore.

Demopolis lies at the confluence of the Tombigbee and Black Warrior Rivers in an area where two topographical regions, the Canebrake and Black Belt, meet.

Get in

Demopolis is centered at the junction of Highways 43 and 80, the former of which connects the town to Tuscaloosa and Birmingham and the latter joining it to Meridian and Montgomery.
